AOW 101 - PLEIN AIR TRAVEL PAINTING, In Watercolor and Mixed Wet Media
Instructor: Jacob Higginbottom
Level:
All levels welcome

Make your next visit to a foreign city more meaningful and memorable. Sign up for Fort Point artist, Jacob Higginbottom’s fun & creative watercolor workshop. Higginbottom’s paintings are informed by his life-long passion for world travel, architecture and urban environments.
Under his guidance, you will learn to see and record the unique variations of city life quickly, spontaneously and accurately. Leave your camera behind and learn why watercolor, with its ease of portability and compatibility with other mediums, has long been a favorite choice of artists over the centuries wishing to record observations from their travels.

This class will focus on:
• Highlighting a center of interest
• Freehand sketching of cityscapes
• How to achieve strong value contrast and color harmony with watercolor
• Introduction to gesso, gouache and ink as tools for unifying a composition

  AOW 103 - URBAN NOCTURNE
Instructor: Vincent Crotty
Level:
Intermediate

Fort Point Studio School is pleased to offer a unique plein-air workshop with Vincent Crotty,
the 2001 recipient of the John Stobart Foundation Award for Excellence in Plein Air Painting. The ability to capture the changing effects of late afternoon and evening light is one of the many problems facing plein-air painters. In this workshop, Crotty has chosen mid- June with its extended hours of daylight and unparalleled opportunities for color study to share his methods of painting the urban nocturne in Fort Point Channel's historic waterfront district.

Learn how to:
• Control color and value in low-light painting conditions.
• Add mood and atmosphere by incorporating ambient light sources; street lights, car head lights and light emanating from building interiors.
• Add touches of life to a scene by incorporating pedestrians and cars.
• Take everyday buildings and make beautifully designed paintings using light shadow & mass.
• Strengthen wet-on-wet painting skills by working directly and spontaneously.

Date: Saturday, June 26, 2010
Time: 3pm to 10pm (1 hour break for dinner)
Workshop Fee: $130.00
PDPs: 6 PDPs available for art educators
Materials: Materials are not included in course fee. (materials list)

AOW 904 - SEA & CITYSCAPE
Instructor: Joel Babb
Level:
Intermediate

From Canaletto to J.M. Turner, seaports and harbors carry a rich and vibrant artistic history. It is therefore with great pleasure that we present this unique 1-day workshop with Joel Babb, one of New England’s foremost realist painters.

“His art is his own, spellbinding and versatile, whether it is a bird’s eye view of Boston’s Back Bay or a worm’s eye view of the forest in his beloved Maine.” Marcia Vose ~ Director, Vose Contemporary

The day’s activities begin at the Boston Federal Courthouse Park on the western end of Fan Pier. Students will have the opportunity to capture early morning light reflected upon the dynamic view of Boston’s waterfront from Downtown to East Boston. Mr. Babb will begin the workshop by demonstrating methods of the alla prima color sketch, which puts an emphasis on working quickly, accurately and intuitively. Demonstrations and discussions will focus on observable physical aspects of the cityscape, sea and sky. The class will break mid-day for two hours and meet again in the afternoon to take advantage of late afternoon lighting conditions. The day ends with critique, group discussion and appreciation of the work.

A note about the weather:
While we hope for blue skies - some of the best landscape paintings record the combined effects of
rain, fog and clouds. Plein-Air workshops are oriented to painting outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. If showers are predicted there are several protected areas in the neighborhood with good visual material that we can move to. One is under the new Moakley Bridge - near the Barking Crab Restaurant. There are also two long, covered pedestrian walkways: one at the corner of the Congress St. Bridge and the other at the corner or the Summer St. Bridge.

A note about the location:
Students are to meet at Fan Pier in front of the the Boston Federal Courthouse Park at Moakely Courthouse on the western end of Fan Pier at 8 am. For parking and directions visit:
John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse
