Instructor: Kaetlyn Wilcox
All levels welcome
In this introductory workshop we will look at the ways that watercolor can be used in illustration—both literary (ie. children’s book illustration) and scientific (ie. botanical illustration, field guides). We will also take a look at the ways in which these kinds of illustrations have influenced the work of contemporary fine artists and we will jump right into the practice of illustrating with watercolor. Guided exercises in drawing, color mixing and basic watercolor painting techniques will culminate with the creation of a small narrative piece. The instructor will provide source material for this final project though students are welcome to incorporate photos, sketches or small objects of their own choosing.

B907 - BOX of PASTELS
Pastel Portrait Workshop
Friday, May 1, 2009
Instructor: Janet Monafo
Janet Monafo has been investigating the psychological aspects of the human figure and self portrait in pastel for over thirty years. A widely respected artist, she co-edited “The Best of Pastel” (see below) and was selected for the Pastel Society Hall of Fame in 2002.
During this one-day pastel portrait workshop you will be shown methods of organizing the proportions of the head and features by blocking in simple planes and values. A limited mono-chromatic palette and techniques such as "lost' and found' edges" will enable students to quickly create the illusion of 3-dimensionality. Working from life, students will be encouraged to work loosely, with many beginnings to help establish an expressive sense of unity within the portrait.
