S101 - FIGURE DRAWING
Instructor: Paul Rahilly
Level: Beginning through advanced

Fort Point Studio School is pleased to offer figure drawing with Paul Rahilly, celebrated master figurative artist and respected instructor. Paul’s expertise is drawn from over 30 years of teaching in the Boston area. His lectures are dense with technical information and laced with wit and humor. The workshop will introduce students to methods of examining line and structure as a means of relating forms, organizing shapes and defining space. Gesture, perspective, light & shade and working from memory will be analyzed in straightforward lectures and demonstrations which will be supplemented with hands-on technical assistance. Returning students welcome.

Course Objectives:
• To understand how line-relationships work to unify composition
• To gain a greater awareness of how planes and shapes create structure and volume
• To analyze historical approaches to drawing the figure from the renaissance to present

PORTRAIT DRAWING: Sessions I & II
Instructor: Lisa Knox
Level: All levels welcome

In this workshop we will investigate the expressive potential of portrait drawing. Each session introduces a different model, medium and pose. Demonstrations in the anatomy head and features along with slide presentations and guided exercises will aid students as they navigate their way around the complex and subtle topography of the human face.

Workshop Objectives
• To increase students ability to draw convincing portraits in 3 views - front, profile and ¾.
• To demonstrate methods of simplifying the eyes, ears, nose and mouth into basic planes and shapes.
• To investigate drawing mediums in the application of portraiture
• To analyze the social, political and personal sphere that influenced the making of famous works of portraiture.

BASIC DRAWING: Sessions I & II
Instructor: Lisa Knox
Level: Beginning through intermediate

These workshops are designed for students who have had no previous drawing experience or for those interested in sharpening their skills. You will learn the essential components of representational drawing beginning with contour, planes, negative space and perspective in session one. The second session will focus on value studies and the analysis of light on simple geometric forms as well as drapery and reflective surfaces. Studio exercises involve the rendering of simple objects accurately and efficiently with the idea that the ability to draw simple objects beautifully allows you the freedom to move onto more challenging subject matter.

PORTRAIT PAINTING: Sessions I & II
Instructor: Lisa Knox
Level: Beginning through advanced

This workshop applies traditional principles of form and value to the subject of portraiture. The anatomical structure of the human head and features will be demonstrated with clear, concise examples.
Demonstrations and discussion are centered on painting with oils though students are welcome to use acrylics, pencil or pen and ink with wash. The first session begins with guided exercises designed for a limited palette of four colors plus white. The second session expands the color range and introduces open palette color mixing. Thoughtful and informed instruction/critiques drawn from over 15 years of teaching experience. PowerPoint presentations will provide an overview of portraiture from the Renaissance to present. Contemporary trends in portraiture along with group critiques will help students develop their own personal style and vision. Returning students welcome.
