SUI 901 - THE VISUAL JOURNAL: A Guide to Creative Thinking

This workshop is designed to open new paths of visual thinking and problem-solving to communicate experiences as you develop content and narrative. The vehicle by which each student records these experiences is what Wolfe calls the “Visual Journal.” Each day a variety of themes, exercises and materials will be introduced. Focused assignments and exercises are sequenced to expand creative thinking – emphasizing process over product.

Themes are based on you and your relationship to sound, touch, color, poetry, music, memory and mythology. Group discussions will assist in formulating a direction, which may produce any number of expressions in various media. Students will come away with a completed portfolio or visual journal full of ideas and information.

You will learn:
• Methods for developing a personal visual vocabulary
• Creativity exercises designed to encourage various types of learners to take creative risks
• Techniques for experimenting with content and narrative
• Methods of integrating a variety of materials, images and concepts into visual expression

SUI 902 - PORTRAIT DRAWING

In this workshop we will investigate the expressive potential of portrait drawing. Each session introduces a different model, method and pose. Demonstrations in the anatomy head and features along with slide presentations and guided exercises will aid students as they navigate their way around the complex and subtle topography of the human face.

SUI 903 - PORTRAIT PAINTING
Instructor: Lisa Knox
Level: Beginning through intermediate

This workshop applies traditional principles of form, value, and color to the subject of portraiture.
The anatomical structure of the human head and features will be demonstrated with clear, concise examples. Thoughtful and informed instruction/critiques drawn from over 15 years of teaching experience. PowerPoint presentations will provide an overview of portraiture from the Renaissance to present. Contemporary trends in portrait painting along with group critiques will help students develop their own personal style and vision. All levels are welcome though some painting experience is recommended. Artists are encouragegd to use the limited palette of four colors plus white outlined on the materials list. Experienced portrait painters may work with the "open palette." Returning students welcome.

Workshop Objectives:
• To introduce methods of simplifying the complex topography of the face into basic planes and shapes.
• To identify underlying facial structure to better understand how bones
and muscles influence surface form and expression.
• To understand how manipulation of relative value and temperature can be used
as a basis for determining flesh tones.

SUI 900 - BOOK ARTS: FORM & CONTENT

All levels welcome

In this three-day workshop we will produce a sturdy, hardboard album style book and an elegant box to house it. The content of each page will be worked on individually; editing, ordering and binding is done at the end. This approach to book assembly is great for the person who is not trained in book layout. The pages will be created from the content you decide to bring with you, anything you would like to see housed in book format; photographs, drawings, paintings, letters, poetry, collectables, a child’s school work, etc. You may also choose to do some image-making, incorporating collage and text in class. While turning the pages of your collected imagery, whether groupings, series or sequences you will experience a pace and rhythm of your work.

Materials: Pre-cut binders board, pre-cut paper for pages and pva glue will be provided by the school.

SUI 904 - MAKING MEMORY BOOKS BY HAND

Preserve and present moments from your life or that of a loved one. In this 3 day workshop we'll explore several book structures and simple techniques for working with your original material without harming it. Photographs, letters, journal entries even small mementos will be
incorporated into unique one of a kind books that allow for further inclusions to the book as time goes by. Some bookbinding experience is helpful but not necessary.

SUI 905 - STILL LIFE PAINTING: Object, Narrative & Meaning

Previous drawing and painting experience recommended

Drawing inspiration from Dutch Vanitas and Memento Mori this class will investigate the narrative power of still life painting. Through slides we will study the wealth of artists who use narrative elements in their own work, examining how familiar objects can suggest multiple interpretations depending on point of view, light, tonal arrangement and placement. Through observation and analysis of form, color, and composition, students will investigate how illusion and allusion might be used to evoke a visual story within the boundaries of the canvas.

SUI 906 - PROCESS & PRACTICE IN CONTEMPORARY ART

This workshop is designed for artists and art educators interested in expanding their understanding of contemporary art trends. We will talk about how artists such as Anna Mendenitta, Kiki Smith,
Matthew Barney, Chuck Close and others have found ways of incorporating a variety of materials and methods into their art making and why the ideas raised by their work matter. Exercises will be
introduced to familiarize you with a specific set of themes which deal with contrasting issues of group and individual identity. Slide presentaions and hands-on studio time will be supplemented with visits to the nearby Institute of Contemporary Art.

Workshop Objectives:
• To become familiar with concepts, vocabulary and ideas common in today’s art world.
• To develop methods of decoding and evaluating contemporary art practices.
• To discuss the role of research, funding and documentation in contemporary art.
• To develop methods of incorporating contemporary theory and practice into the studio or classroom.

SUI 907 - GILDING WORKSHOP: How to Work with Gold Leaf
Instructor: Robert Baart
Level: All levels welcome


This workshop will introduce students to traditional water and oil gilding techniques commonly used in framing, furniture restoration and the decorative arts. Working on simple projects with step-by-step instruction, participants will be guided through each stage of the gilding process; wood preparation, how to mix and use glue size, gesso ground, red clay for water gilding, decorative techniques of incised design and gesso relief, and the application and burnishing of 23karat gold leaf. Lectures on gilding as it applies to the history of art and contemporary uses will complement the demonstrations and class work. In addition, Mr. Baart’s award winning documentary on the making of gold leaf “Goldbeating” will be shown. A book of 23 karat gold leaf and related materials will be provided.
