Joel Babb: Sea & Cityscape Workshop

This was a pivotal opportunity for me. I had been trying to paint on location on my own, but not making much progress. I feel I got more in one day than I have in months of experimentation. Great class and fun being in Boston - seeing the landscape in a new way.

Everything about this workshop was great. The instruction was excellent with training from a premier artist. The location in one of the oldest art communities in Massachusetts only enhanced the excellence of the workshop. I recommend this workshop and the Fort Point Studio School to all artists - from novice to professional.

The class with Joel Babb was fantastic. He was an enthusiastic teacher and artist. I learned and experienced a great deal in just a couple of days. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and will remember it always.

I immensely enjoyed the workshop “Sea and Cityscape” last weekend. It was very well organized and had just the right number of participants to allow for individual attention. The setting was breathtaking…couldn’t have been better. I look forward to participating in workshops with the Fort Point Studio School in the future.

Robert Baart: Renaissance Painting Techniques Workshop

This workshop is a true eye-opener. Bob Baart knows how to teach. He presents a diverse set of materials, a little history, some science and a lot of hands-on practice with historical techniques employed by artists. The hands-on application of what we learn is the strongest aspect of this workshop. Bob exposed us to the preparation of a gesso board; raised/embossed gesso technique; silver point drawing; water gilding; egg tempera painting and fresco. For me the gold leafing was the highlight. I felt like a child doing something for the first time. Bob presents the techniques with enthusiasm and then allows students to jump in and try the techniques on his own, he gently guides his students through the moves – a sign of a great teacher. As a historian, I now have a lot more familiarity with techniques that in the past were only words on museum wall text. Thank you for this great workshop!

I took a class at Fort Point Studio School recently. As a mid-career artist, I found it to be a stimulating, yet relaxing way to learn new skills. The instructor was great. The location of the school is convenient. I plan to take more classes in the future.

I enjoyed this course immensely! Robert Baart is an excellent teacher. He was prepared – had all the materials ready. He was organized – had slides to show the class while the various projects were in stages of drying, etc. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He also was very attentive to each student and checked on their progress often. The Renaissance has always been one of my favorite periods in art history and I often wondered how works of art were done. Now I know! Thank you.

  Vincent Crotty: Contemporary Urban Realism

I was very impressed with the caliber of teaching in this two-day oil painting workshop and with the professionalism of Fort Point Studio School. Mr. Crotty put a lot of thought and effort into the preparation, including demonstrations, slides, and instruction on the science of light and color. He was tireless in assisting us individually during our outdoor painting sessions, offering excellent observations and assistance. This was my first class in oil painting and I really struggled with the medium but with Vincent’s encouragement I pursued and gained a very good knowledgebase to move on and work in oils. I look forward to his next class!!

Vincent Crotty has a gift. A talent for painting and teaching. A rare combination! I wouldn't hesitate to be a student of Vincent's again. The man walks on water!

Lisa Knox: Portrait Painting and Drawing

What a great workshop! Portrait painting with Lisa was both fun and very informative. Lisa is an excellent artist, teacher and person. I can’t wait to come back for other classes.

I continue to learn and grow with each portrait class I take at Fort Point Studio School.

Lisa’s approach to teaching portrait painting is very straightforward and easy to understand. The class is structured to challenge beginners and more experienced painters as well. I had a great time. I would definably take a class with Lisa again.

As someone who has previous painting – and portrait painting experience – I found Lisa’s portrait class to be both extremely helpful and enjoyable. She allowed me a great deal of independence to try to apply some of her ideas about portrait painting, e.g., planar analysis of the head, working up the image in stages – in ways that complemented my already established habits and tendencies. Her instruction paid attention not only to anatomy, perspective, materials and other “technical” concerns, but, equally important, to aesthetic/expressive considerations. Lisa did an excellent job adapting her teaching of all these things to students with widely varying levels of experience.

I’ve only attended three workshops so far and I feel I’ve learned so much already – things I struggled with for years.

  Bonnie Mineo: Water-Based Printmaking
I learned much more that I could have imagined in one-day. It’s so great that I can take all these ideas to the classroom because it’s all non-toxic and low-tech. It’s so exciting that I can produce amazing layered monoprints with Styrofoam.

  Peter Madden: Book Arts

It couldn’t have been better. Not being artistically inclined, I was a bit nervous at first but I immediately felt welcome and comfortable. Peter’s ability to explain and demonstrate is superb! I could keep up and even do well. I will definitely look into more classes at the studio and specifically with Peter. I personally enjoyed the day – the first workshop that flew by – and I can really use what I learned with my 4th graders! Thanks!

Lisa Knox was so helpful and generous. Peter Madden is TOP RATE with his own art examples and his instruction. Lisa’s dog is cute too. Fort Point Studio School was easy to find and easy to park.
A pleasure to take a workshop in a working art community in Boston.

  Lisa Olson: Book Arts Workshop

I really enjoyed the satisfaction of completing something that had a beautiful end result with so few materials. I also enjoyed the quiet solitude of the work. The idea that something can look so complicated but actually be very minimal is appealing to me as an elementary art teacher.

This workshop was a great time. It’s nice to get some new ideas for lessons that incorporate 3-D design. This workshop has made me want to go home and make a ton of books.

I loved this workshop because it was varied but yet thematic based. The hands on experience and the information were very useful. Bookmaking provides a great vehicle for interdisciplinary learning.

  Stephanie Stigliano: Book Arts

This was a great workshop with very useful information. It was one of the best in terms of applications with students. I look forward to teaching my students the tunnel book techniques we tried in the workshop.

- June K.-R., High School Art Educator

The tunnel book workshop was one of the most inspiring classes I’ve taken. After a great studio visit, we learned new techniques and made books. It was very rapid learning, upbeat and fun! Great instructor and lovely studio space.

This course was a great combination of learning new techniques while also being inspired to express myself in a new art form, a tunnel book - who knew!

  Paul Rahilly: Figure Drawing Workshop
The class was fantastic. Drawing under Paul’s direction is a joy – He made me laugh while making his point. Paul has a rigorous dedication to the basic principles of constructive drawing technique, but it is an enjoyable rigor.

Paul is a wonderful teacher; his class is geared to every level of artist, beginner to experience. His method of teaching is simplified for all to understand. He has a great personality and sense of humor and gives attention to all students.
